Power washing is a great way to clean moss, mildew, dirt, and grime off surfaces like roofs, siding, decks, porches, and fences. However, using the right technique is crucial to avoid damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide for each area:

🌿 1. Power Washing Moss Off a Roof

⚠️ Important:

  • Avoid high pressure on roofs (especially shingles) — it can damage the surface.
  • Consider using a roof cleaner or moss killer before washing.

Steps:

  1. Prep the Area:
    • Cover landscaping with tarps or plastic sheeting.
    • Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear.
  2. Apply a Moss Killer (Optional but Recommended):
    • Use a pump sprayer to apply a 50/50 solution of water and bleach, or a commercial roof cleaner.
    • Let it sit for 15–20 minutes.
  3. Soft Wash the Roof:
    • Use a low-pressure washer tip (like a 40° white nozzle).
    • Start from the top and work downward to avoid forcing water under shingles.
    • Gently rinse off the moss and cleaner.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly and allow time for the remaining moss to die off and be washed away by rain.

🏡 2. Power Washing a House (Siding)

Tips:

  • Use the correct pressure for your siding:
    • Vinyl or wood: 1300–1600 PSI max
    • Brick: Up to 2000 PSI

Steps:

  1. Close Windows and Doors, and cover outlets/lights.
  2. Apply House Cleaner:
    • Use a detergent made for siding.
    • Apply from bottom up to avoid streaking.
  3. Let it Dwell: Wait 5–10 minutes, but don’t let it dry.
  4. Rinse:
    • Use a 25° or 40° tip.
    • Spray from top down.
    • Keep nozzle at least 12–18 inches from the siding.

🌲 3. Power Washing Deck, Porch, and Fence

Pressure Guidelines:

  • Wood Deck/Fence: 500–1200 PSI
  • Composite Decking: Follow manufacturer specs — usually low PSI.

Steps:

  1. Clear and Sweep the area.
  2. Apply Deck/Fence Cleaner (you can use a bleach mix: 1 part bleach to 3 parts water, or store-bought solution).
  3. Let Sit for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Wash with Low Pressure:
    • Use a 25° tip.
    • Spray with the grain of the wood.
    • Maintain a consistent distance (about 12–18 inches).
  5. Let Dry for 24–48 hours before applying any stain or sealant.

✅ General Tips:

  • Use proper nozzles:
    • 0° Red: Not recommended – too strong
    • 15° Yellow: Good for tough grime
    • 25° Green: General cleaning
    • 40° White: Soft surfaces
  • Test first: Always test in a small, hidden area.
  • Wear safety gear: Goggles, gloves, and non-slip shoes.
  • Avoid ladders: Use extension wands instead for safety.
